Additionally, these products are usually a lot less expensive than crates. This price difference is most likely due to the material these dog carriers are made with and their size.

See, they’re made from harsh materials such as metal, wood, or hard plastic that made them look like scary, almost prison-esque places. But for some reason, dogs seem to love these crates and often take on a possessive attitude about them.
Honestly, it’s essential you don’t let their rugged outer shell fool you; these crates have a ton of functions and can be a useful addition to your dog’s life. For instance, they’re useful in the potty training process, which makes them an essential item to have around for puppy owners.
Besides being useful in puppy training, dog crates are also much larger than carriers; therefore, making them a much more efficient option for larger dogs for both transport and lounging around your home.

Dog Carriers: Soft-sided vs Hard-sided
As mentioned previously, dog carriers are classified as either soft-sided or hard-sided. I’m sure you’ve come into contact with examples of both styles before during your time as a dog owner. However, I’m going to go over briefly what each one looks like and discuss circumstances where one might be more appropriate than the other.

Soft-sided dog carriers are those containment products that often have mesh walls on four sides. These walls are meant to provide better ventilation and give your a dog a bit more scenery to look at as you carry them.
In other words, it kind looks you’re carrying around a royal subject rather than a dog. But what they provide in comfortability and scenery is usually detrimental to the overall safety of the product. See, these mesh walls are easily escapable for mischievous dogs.
It also doesn’t help that a zipper opens these soft-sided crates. After all, zippers are known to either slip down or malfunction; allowing for an opening to present itself. And it also makes it more difficult to control your dog when you’re opening up the dog carrier.
With this in mind, if you have a rambunctious Jack Russell Terrier like mine, don’t get a soft-sided carrier. It will only end up with you chasing them around the airport or, god forbid, the city streets.
On the other hand, if you have an older smaller dog that you like to pamper, go ahead get a soft-sided carrier. In my opinion, every older dog deserves to get the royal subject treatment now and then.
Best Hard-sided Dog Carriers
Although hard-sided carriers look a little harsher, they’re easily more secure and safe for your smaller dog. I mean, wouldn’t you trust a well secured gated lock arrangement rather than a zipper? I know, I would.
But this sense of secureness comes at the expense of some other things such as ventilation and scenery. See, these hard-sided dog carriers have solid sides with nowhere to look out from beside the gate in the front; some do have ventilation holes on the sides.
Due to this, some pet owners view these carriers as little prison cells. However, I’d argue these carriers have a more essential function than making your dog feel comfortable; they ensure they’re safe and have little to no chance of escaping outside of human error.
And just like crates, these carriers oddly make some dogs feel safe. So, if you have a smaller dog with a tendency to be a little troublemaker, get a hard-sided carrier, and your problem will flutter away.

In comparison to wired crates, plastic pet crates are far lighter and more portable. And they’re made from, you guessed it, plastic materials, which makes them pretty durable. There also a lot less breathable than wired crates.
See, these crates have four solid walls, which limits the ventilation. Obviously, the pet companies try to compensate for this by putting little holes on each side. But there’s still a lot less airflow than what you’d see with a wire crate.
However, there’s an added benefit with this lack of access to the outside world; your dog’s a lot less likely to bark at you. And it blocks out other possible distractions as well, so, you’re less likely to cause such a raucous when transporting your dog in one of these crates.
Lastly, these plastic crates are often entirely airline approved, which make them extremely convenient for smaller dog owners. I mean, with these crates, you can simply bring your dog abroad the plane as a carry-on.
Selecting the Right Size
Regardless of the canine carrier or crate you choose, it’s essential you ensure it’s the right size for your pup. After all, you want them to feel as comfortable as possible in this confined space. In other words, they should be able “to stand, turn and lie down in a natural manner.”

Furthermore, the handles are made from a material the company called “kayak-grade,” which I can assume means extraordinarily durable and long-lasting. Also, they included stainless steel chew guards to withstand the power of even the strongest chewers.
But even with being the most advanced, they couldn’t solve two essential issues: the high price and the heavy weight. In the end, it might have the most features, but for some, it might not be the best carrier/crate for them.
I’d recommend going with the Gunner Kennels G1 Intermediate Dog Crate. It’s easily the safest carrier for larger dogs on the market and will ensure there are no issues with a rowdy dog with its incredible features.
After all, the only category it failed to score a perfect score in was mobility, and that’s mainly a preference thing on my part. I know, it’s expensive, but if you have the funds, this choice really is a no-brainer.

Although this crate has shown some issues withstanding the prolonged usage. As you might expect from a bargain bin product, this crate tends to wear down over time. However, at this price, it doesn’t make much of a difference.

See, this XL dog crate is an affordable, easy to clean and assemble product that won’t let you down unless you fit one criteria that I’ll come back to later. And it has a 1-year warranty just in case some accident happens, and the crate becomes damaged.
More importantly, the manufacturer made sure to reduce the risk of the crate hurting you or your dog by rounding the corners. Often, these types of crates will have cheap, sharp wire poking out from the edges that could cause some significant injuries.
But there’s one more significant issue that does make this crate fall in my eyes: this crate, regardless of size, tends to fail in containing large breed dogs. Therefore, this crate should only be an option for a small breed dog owner that can’t cause damage to the flimsy bars.

Unlike the previous three reviewed products, this collapsible dog crate isn’t a wired crate; it isn’t a plastic one either. Instead, it’s a crate entirely made from a heavy-duty mesh fabric. And this mesh fabric certainly has its benefits.
For example, since it’s mesh throughout the model, the ventilation is off the charts for a non-wired crate. In fact, it’s so well-ventilated that the manufacturer has made a point to designated it ready for outdoor use.
The mesh also makes the crate incredibly lightweight and portable. You’ll never have to worry about straining yourself moving this mesh crate from place to place. Now, your pup can bring along their new favorite sleeping space anywhere they go.
But with all these fantastic abilities this mesh material has, there’s still one blight on this crate’s record; the price. In all honesty, compared to some of the carriers we reviewed earlier this crate cost nothing, but within these five crates, this one’s easily one of the most expensive.

Obviously, the most fashionable crate on this list, the EliteField 3-Door Folding Soft Dog Crate, gives the consumer an unprecedented amount of choices. I mean, thirteen color choices does seem a little excessive, no?
However, I would be lying if I didn’t say I appreciate the effort EliteField put into making sure everyone had a chance to find the perfect style for them. Besides the vast number of options, this model is a lot the previous mesh crate we reviewed.
See, it has the mesh doors for ventilation/airflow, a good warranty, an incredible foldability; but what’s different about this crate is it comes with its own bed included. In my opinion, a very nice touch added in by EliteField to show they care about meeting all their customers’ needs.
But, this inclusion of the bed has seemed to negatively affect the price because this product is easily the most expensive out of these five crates. In the end, I guess you do have to pay top dollar for quality, even in the pet carriers and crates marketplace.
Overall, due to its peak mobility, my recommended crate is the Noz2Noz Soft-Krater Indoor and Outdoor Crate. It’s a lightweight, convenient fit to become any dog’s favorite new sleeping spot. And although it’s pretty pricey, I still find this product incredibly worth it thanks to its fantastic features and high-quality.

As mentioned above, pet carriers and crates can be a handy tool in the potty training and other training activities. But the crate training process is going to take a lot of time and effort on your part. However, luckily , you’ll find some tips about how to make this process a lot easier below:
- Never use the crate as punishment. If you do, your dog will end up fearing it.
- Don’t overuse or keep your dog in the crate too long. This could make them depressed or anxious and doesn’t give them enough exercise.
- Crating your dog should only be a temporary thing. In other words, only do it until you’re confident your dog won’t tear apart your house.
- Place the crate in an area where you and your family spend a lot of time. This will help your dog feel less isolated because they associate this space with you.
- Feed your dog some of their meals in the crate. This will help them start to associate it with a pleasant experience rather than a negative one.
Potential Problems
Now, pet carriers & crates can solve a whole bunch of issues for dog owners; however, if misused, these products can also be the cause of some significant problems as well.
For example, if you overuse the crate or carrier, you cause severe emotional damage to your dog. In fact, prolonged time in the crate can make your dog become depressed or anxious.
There other reasons as well such as using the carrier/crate as punishment will make your dog fear it and refuse to enter. But as long as, you use your carrier/crate in an appropriate way such as the method we point you towards in the crate training section, these products should be a handy and useful tool.
And remember, if you can’t leave your dog alone without worrying about them destroying the house, there are always better options than putting them in the crate all day. For instance, you can call a sitter or sign up for the dog sitter apps widely available to you such as Wag or Rover.
Regular Cleaning
Every two to four weeks you should give your dog’s crate a good cleaning. Now, how you go about cleaning your dog’s crate/carrier will largely depend on the type of crate/carrier you end up buying.
For instance, if you have a wire crate or plastic carrier/crate, all you need to do is remove all the bedding and any other items inside the crate. Then, from there it’s a simple wipe down and wash off situation.
In these cases, you might want to check out our article on pet odor and stain removers to ensure you get whatever stain your dog left behind in the crate out.
Now, if you have a soft-sided carrier or mesh crate, you’re going to use club soda instead of those odor and stain removers. Those will, most likely, be too harsh for the materials used in making a soft-sided or mesh crate/carrier.
After you apply club soda to the stain, hand wash the crate/carrier in the sink with a hose or water faucet. Then, put it into the washing machine. When’s it done, let it air dry and sprinkle some baking soda into the crate: let deodorize it for a good 15 to 20 minutes.
